Why is an earphone necessary for your phone’s radio?
Imagine you’re having a hectic day at your office. After working for 6 hours straight, you decided to have a break and rejoice in your old memories by listening to your favorite radio station. You clicked the icon, only to realize that a headset is necessary for its operation, leaving you annoyed.
But, why even after two decades of widespread evolution, we couldn’t get rid of headsets to function the radio? And why the headset is required at all? Let’s understand:-
How do Radio Waves Work??
A transmitter is used for the generation of radio waves while a receiver detects the signal. The antenna allows a radio transmitter to send the energy into space and a receiver to pick up energy from space. The antenna boosts the strength of the electrical energy. The electrons get energized and move back and forth to create the EM waves that travel at the speed of light. The receiving antenna converts the EM waves to the electrical current. The electrical current is further unbundled into the sound energy, which ultimately reaches our ears.
Use of Antenna:-
In modern radios, we use FM(frequency modulation) rather than AM(amplitude modulation). The frequencies of FM signals are ten times greater than that of AM. The length of an antenna is determined by the wavelength of the wave. The size of the antenna required for catching an FM signal is roughly 90cm in length.
Sadly, the modern handsets we use don’t have enough capacity to accommodate such length. However, they have an interesting feature in the form of headsets, which solves the above problem. But, how?? Let’s see!
The headphone or an earphone is an insulated metal wire with a coil surrounding a magnet at one end and a thick metal jack at the other. It serves its purpose by picking the energy and sending it to the tuner.
But, are they necessary??
Well, the answer is NO!.
Any metal wire can do the trick. Thus, your radio works even when you connect your phone to an external speaker through a cord. Even several mobile manufacturers provided a separate antenna but, that was unnecessary bulky and unattractive, therefore many opted out of it.
Also, it makes complete sense to listen to it through headphones, because of privacy and better sound quality.
